Let's face it, we have become a sedentary people.
If we look back one or two generations, obesity was not prevalent.
Our grandmothers and great-grandmothers worked hard all day long.
Their level of daily physical activity was quite elevated.
They worked on the farm, they did laundry by hand, they fetched water, cut firewood, cooked from scratch, and even sewed their own clothes.
This was their exercise.
We live in an automated world where physical activity has been diminished significantly. We drive everywhere, and we sit at our jobs for hours on end.
When we come home, we sit again in front of the television or computer.
Because of this lack of activity, over time, our bodies become weak.
Our heart and lungs are not challenged.
Our muscles lose their tone.
As the old adage goes, “Use it or lose it!”
Our bodies are meant to be active.
We have to find ways to include physical activity into our daily lives.
Parking further is just one idea.
We already talked about taking the stairs on Day 3 of the 24 Days of Wellness.
My mother used to tell me how my grandfather loved to walk.
He would take the bus each day, not to work, but he would take the bus far away from work and then walk back!!!
Get creative and find ways to add to your physical activity each day!
