Spring - a time for renewal, rebirth, and reboot. We busily run around the house and yard to spruce things up after a long, cold winter. What about ourselves? How can we do a spring cleaning for us?
Let’s look at some things we can include in our diet to help our body perform a spring cleaning - from the inside out.
One of the simplest ways to help your body cleanse itself is to drink plenty of purified water. It hydrates the organs so that they can function optimally, it flushes toxins out of the organs, and helps transport that waste out of your body. Our bodies are made up of about 60% water, so it makes sense to drink lots of water to stay healthy. The general advice is that we should drink at least 8 glasses of water a day.
Drinking lemon water serves to stimulate the liver’s purification process. First thing in the morning, add the juice of one quarter to one-half lemon to a glass of warm water. Its bitterness helps to encourage a bowel movement. It is also a natural diuretic that increases the flow of urine to help flush out toxins. Remember to rinse your mouth after drinking lemon water to protect your tooth enamel.

Drink your greens
Raw, freshly made vegetable and fruit juices are rich in vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and trace elements. These are beneficial to your health and help prevent disease. In juice form, these nutrients are easily assimilated without putting a strain on your digestive organs. Besides being highly nourishing, fresh juices also help your body to detoxify. As alkaline juices nourish your cells, they begin to release acids (toxins) that can then be removed through the elimination channels.
Eat your greens
Dark green leafy vegetables are bursting with nutrients and disease-fighting antioxidants. They are naturally low in calories and high in fibre. This acts as a scrub brush for your digestive tract, detoxifying as it passes through to the colon. Being an alkaline food, it also helps to soothe inflammation in your body. Include these excellent leafy greens in your diet: arugula, beet greens, bok choi, broccoli, cabbage, collard greens, dandelion, kale, mustard greens, romaine lettuce, spinach, swiss chard, and turnip greens.
Just like greens, berries are packed with antioxidants and are high in fibre. This cleansing and nourishing food aids your body’s natural detoxification process. Fresh blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, and strawberries are all excellent choices. Pick some up next time you're at the market. They are great as a snack, in smoothies, or added to hot cereal.
