Hormone disruptors that cause estrogen dominance Menopause is a natural event in a woman’s life that can cause a hormonal imbalance. But there are other harmful things in your everyday life that are hormone disruptors. These hormone disruptors are estrogens that are not produced in your body, but come from your environment. These substances are called xenoestrogens – chemical compounds that mimic estrogen and can cause a hormone imbalance in a woman’s body. The balance between estrogen and progesterone is vital to maintaining optimal health. Xenoestrogens can cause an estrogen to progesterone imbalance resulting in estrogen dominance. Symptoms of estrogen dominance Here is a list of some of the common symptoms experienced by women with estrogen dominance:
Plastic versus Glass It is difficult to avoid all environmental toxins and hormone disrupting chemicals as they are readily found in everyday items in our homes and places of work – in carpets, paint, furniture, food, beauty products, and more. A good place to begin is by replacing your plastic food containers with glass. A harmful compound called BPA (Bisphenol A) is used in the production of plastics. Avoid heating, cooking or storing foods in plastic wrap or plastic containers. Use glass instead. A great idea is to reuse your glass jars to store your leftovers, your bulk items, your spices, or your grab-and-go meal or salad. Be good to yourself and commit to making this small change today. You can find more advice to help you minimize your exposure to harmful chemicals in Chapter 5 (Hormone Management) of my book HEALTHY BODY FOR LIFE available globally.
