Lois Garton has been a practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for over 25 years. She explains why nutrition is key to maintaining hormone balance as you age.
If the body is well balanced going into menopause, any problems encountered are going to be minimized. The hormonal changes are going to be easier for the body to manage. If you have a body that has been out of balance for 20 or 30 years, that will contribute to having more of a problem when the hormones begin to change.
In Chinese medicine, the Kidney energy is the mother of all energy. This energy naturally depletes as we age; our hair turns grey and our skin ages. How do you keep the Kidney energy strong? First, don't expend your energy carelessly, and second, eat well to keep your energy replenished.
In TCM theory it is the Spleen that works to provide the nutritive energy necessary to buoy up the Kidney energy. Interestingly, in TCM, the Spleen is not only involved in good digestion and absorption of nutritive energy but also in maintaining a balanced hormonal system. So you really do have to eat well and regularly!
I see women in their 50’s who have been pushing themselves every day and following poor dietary habits. When they hit menopause, the wheels fall off. These are the women who are likely to have more severe menopausal symptoms.
Get yourself balanced in your 30’s and 40’s so that at menopause, if you have problems, they will be less severe and easier to address.
Proper nourishment is a good starting point when it comes to keeping the hormones balanced. Hormonal transitions such as menopause can be supported by a nutrient dense diet consisting of whole foods. Include quality protein sources, antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables, and hormone-balancing dietary fats in your daily nutrition.
Eating food high in nutrients will keep your body functioning optimally and give you a better chance at managing your hormonal changes.
